"A breathtaking delivery"
Om Shanti Om is a story of love, dreams, fate, deceit, malice, revenge but most of all REBIRTH...
What begins as a young man's dream of searching for stardom and love ends up into a saga full of hate and revenge.
Om (Shah Rukh Khan) is a junior artist in the 1970's in search of fame.. he is totally sprung by the reigning superstar Shanti (De3pika Padukone). However a twisted set of events leads to the death of Om who is later reborn in the current world...A world of fame and wealth however something is missing... Om attempts to discover the mystery of his demise....and hence the tale unfolds
What was breathtaking about this film???
I have to admitt I've sold my soul to Arjun Rampal (his sex appeal oozes out) and I have to admitt Shar Rukh Khan is growing on me. They delivered such a fantastic performance with the help of Farah Khan (the director of the film). Shah Rukh Khan was able to diversify his persona from a lower-middle class junior artist, to a obnoxious spoilt prestigious superstar. From a comical humorous character to a serious emotional, vengeful personality. Arjun Rampal was able to play a villain superbly and I can say without hesitation this was his best performance ever.
Sabu Cyril (Art Director) created such a fantastic set as he not only brought the 1970's to life on set but also managed to create todays film frenzy.
Manikandan the cinematographer is FANTASTIC. Every shot every scene is fluid and his use of the dolly at the beginning of the film works to the films advantage. He creates continuity so well and dramtises the 70's with the colours and bright lighting. His use of slow motion is fantastic as well as it dramatises the love Om has for Shanti and brings to effect her extraordinary beauty.
Deepika has all it takes to be a top star — the personality, the looks and yes, she's supremely talented too. She comes as a whiff of fresh air! Arjun Rampal impresses in a negative role which suites his image. Shreyas Talpade compliments Shah Rukh Khan wonderfully. Kirron Kher in one word wonderfully insane. Oops thats two words
What I didn't like...
Om Shanti Om is not a crossover movie, it is not anything path breakingly original (It is heavily inspired from Karz, the concept is), it does not have anything particularly refreshing in terms of story or screenplay..etc.. Yet- OSO succeeds, and that was what Farah and co were gunning for this Diwali.
Performances-Its familiar territory for Shah Rukh Khan, I feel it was a role written for him, and the second half simply confirmed this Om Kapoor seemed a bit clichéd. His dying sequence compares to his previous movies and will get the demographic's empathy. I remember crying my eyes out when he died.
OSO- as mentioned is predictable, and yet fun, it works well for people who want a 3 hr reprieve! Its not what I can call 'Miss not' but still is the best of the current lot.
